Getting to Know Modern Kiddo

Welcome to a series of posts called "Getting to Know."  We met so many wonderful and interesting folks at Renegade Craft Fair, I just had to  properly introduce you to them all.

Introducing

Those of you who have kiddos or simply love all things vintage already know about the fabulous design savvy blog Modern Kiddo.  Bloggers Alix & Dottie serve up the best vintage style of the past with a fun-loving and super stylish attitude.  I loooove their blog!  It is my go to place for a little vintage inspiration.  Don't miss  Dottie's Kraft Korner for great vintage crafting projects.  These Moms are always up to something fun!

Alix & Dottie were nice enough to stop by Zelma Rose at Renegade Craft Fair and say hello. Their smiling faces and fiercely fabulous vintage get-ups (check out their Renegade post to see the wears) were a sunny welcome at the 'ol booth.  So here I am a total fan of their blog and when Alix & Dottie introduce themselves and ask if they can take some photos for their blog Modern Kiddo, I just stand there like my brain went on vacation!  "Hi.  Nice to meet you.  Modern Kiddo.  That sounds really cool." DUH!  Seriously I read their blog every week.  It felt strangely similar to when a friend of mine recounted the time he met Madonna. He just stood there unable to say anything relevant or even vaguely social.  "Madonna." Was all he could get out! I guess I can chalk it up to Renegade fever, but really!

Don't miss their super cute guest curator spot on Etsy.  Alix & Dottie brilliantly curated 4 collections inspired by some of their favorite children's books.  How smart is that?!

Thanks Ladies!!

August

Helloooooo!

I can't believe it's almost been two months since Renegade Craft FairTime really flies when you're having fun!  Renegade was a total blast and I want to give big thanks to all of you who came out to do some shopping, show your support and say hello. I loved seeing you all there! I have to say I felt right at home in my backyard inspired display.  The white picket fence was a total team effort, but I'm so happy with the results!!  Anyone recognize the dress form and ironing board I picked up at Alameda Point Antiques Faire?

Before things trend toward fall...I'm gearing up for Capsule September 18th as we speak...I want to introduce you all to some of the new friends we made at Renegade.  I'll be posting introductions over the next few weeks.  Check my next post for "Getting To Know Modern Kiddo."

On the Prowl....Grrrrr.

Port of Oakland
A lovely Sunday was spent at the famous Alameda Antiques and Collectables Faire. Yep, on the prowl for unique display items for Zelma Rose at Renegade Craft Fair.  If you live in the Bay area and have never been, Alameda Faire is the first Sunday of the month out at Alameda Point.  Not only is it a total scene man, but the Faire boasts one of the most picturesque views of the San Francisco skyline and the East and North Bay.  One of my favorite Faire sights is to check out the impressive stacks of cargo containers arriving at Port of Oakland. Plus, you can munch on some killer fresh kettle corn while you shop till you drop. Sounds perfect, right?

Check out some of the great items I picked up today.

I was so happy to find a beautiful vintage wooden ironing board.  A sucker for most things wood, I just had to have it.  This might just get me really into ironing...okay maybe not, but I'm open to the possibility.

Vintage Dress Form
I have been on the look out for another vintage dress form for quite sometime.  I was so excited to not only find one in decent shape, but to find a twinsie!  Believe it or not, I have an almost identical dress form that I brought back to life after rescuing it from a dumpster some 10 years ago.  This one is a bit more petite than my first and has a sturdier stand.  While dress forms covered in muslin are more traditional, I really love the vibrancy of the gray and turquoise fabric on this form.

Clothes Pins

I just couldn't pass up This beautiful vintage jar full of old clothes pins.  Perfect to go with my ironing board! I see a theme evolving here.

Last but not least, my favorite purchases from the day.

A working vintage tape measure in it's original leather casing.  Been on the prowl for one of these for a while.  Finally found one that actually worked.  And yes, I have been measuring EVERYTHING since I got home.
And these are just too much fun! Tiny tiny metal letterpress.  I love all things letterpress, alphabet, and typography.  The weight of these is really nice and the finish is simply beautiful. I am definitely not done playing around with photographing them.  Beautiful!
Until next time, I'll be working away for Renegade, July 9 & 10 in San Francisco.  I'll post with all the details as they come, including my booth number etc., for those of you in town who will be stopping by to say hello.

Oh, also, I just put together a profile page on about.me. It's a one stop site to connect to me on my website, Etsy, Flickr, Twitter and more. Check it out and let me know what you think :)

XOXO

Great blog!

Holy Moly Maker Faire

Wow Maker Faire!  What a great time!  In case you have never been, imagine a place full of all the crafts and DIY projects you have ever dreamed of come to life.  Yeah, it's that good!  I spent the afternoon manning the Etsy Booth with a few of Etsy's own Brooklyn travelers.  We were there talking up the much anticipated I Heart Art SF.

I am so very excited about this project and really thrilled that Etsy has decided to include San Francisco.  Here's the nitty gritty in case you haven't heard:  A new initiative being set forth in the Bay Area, I Heart Art: San Francisco is a program sponsored by Etsy, Inc. to promote connectivity between local artists, organizations & institutions in a way which enriches our community as a whole. Yeah, it's going to be big! Check out the I Heart Art San Francisco Blog for all the updates.  Don't forget to join us for the Craft Party June 10th (for details see the I Heart Art SF Blog), it's the Team SF Etsy Kick off Party for I Heart Art SF! And last but not least, thanks so much to Kimm and the Etsy team for a super fun Saturday afternoon at the Maker Faire Etsy Booth!

See you at the Craft Party June 10!

XOXO

It's a Handmade Spring

April seems to be the start of a handmade revolution here at Zelma Rose!  First, we want to thank Emmaline Bride for the beautiful feature on our Chalkboard Lockets.  Check out their blog for amazing handmade wedding ideas to personalize your celebration.

Also of the handmade & DIY, I am gearing up to film my first in a series of DIY videos. The first, will focus on Mother's Day and how to make your very own adjustable ring out of spare buttons. Perfect for Mom! I'll be posting the videos here, so be sure to check back for step by step instructions on how to make your very own Zelma Rose inspired jewelry.

And...as you may have noticed I have been revamping my Etsy shop.  New look, new sections and lots of new items.  In the works now? A couture section highlighting Zelma Rose shoe clips and fascinators.  Perfect for the bride to be and all her wedding fabulousness!

April 2011

Hey There
Wow!  Happy Spring!  This year just keeps flying by.  So many wonderful things happening in the Bay Area.  Street Festival season is about to begin, the sky is getting sunny, and the fashion is heating up.

Announcements
First things first, I'm so excited to announce that come April 2011, you can find Zelma Rose Designs at RAG in Hayes Valley, San Francisco. Residents Apparel Gallery is the premier place in San Francisco to find clothing, jewelery, and accessories made by Bay Area designers.  Owner Blakely Bass is an incredible buyer and businesswomen.  She has built a wonderful store and has a loyal customer following.  Go see for yourself!

It seems I'm on a bit of a Hayes Valley crush right now, as I will also be selling at Capsule Design Festival in, yeah you guessed it, Hayes Valley on May 1, 2011. Come on down and say hello.

JANUARY 2011

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Well, it's official, we have entered a brand new decade.  May the next ten years be filled with peace, love, happiness, health and wealth. And I suppose some killer fashion couldn't hurt either!

As I enter the new decade and January fills my days with thick San Francisco fog and more rain than I would like I'll be busy working away on new designs for Zelma Rose. Inspiration will come from the indoors this time of year and I'll be visiting friend's studios and San Francisco museums to draw ideas for spring and summer.  Can't wait for the Balenciaga Show in March at the De Young!

UP & COMING AT ZELMA ROSE:

Things to look for at my shop over the coming months...

1. Valentine's Day Gift Bundles

I'll be combining some of my most popular infinity scarves and pendant necklaces into specially priced gift bundles for your Valentine.  As always, bundles will arrive ready for gift giving.

Lorraine Infinity Scarf & Plaid Tartan Pendant Necklace
Alanna Infinity Scarf & Plaid Pendant Necklace

2. Letterpress Numbers and Letters

Over the years I have been fascinated by letterpress.  Okay, so I am kind of obsessed with font and letters and numbers of all shape and sizes.  We have an ongoing collection of vintage letters at home, growing in size, in the hopes of creating the most perfect alphabet someday.

Look for letters and numbers to show up in my designs for spring and summer.  I think they will make great pieces.  I am hoping people will be inspired to represent their last name, lover's name, the number of people in their family, and their lucky number.

3. Zelma Rose Bridal

Finally! I have been sketching and collecting goodies to start a bridal collection for the past year.  I am so excited to have a gathering of beautiful vintage materials to work with.

Classic bridal palette. Don't forget my favorite material...nude tulle!

Some of the lovely vintage adornments that will be part of my bridal collection.

Vintage and new feathers will add movement and interest to the cockades.
When it comes to bridal, versatility is key.  Ribbon Cockades will be created to be worn in a multitude of ways.  Pieces can travel from head to waist to toe and be worn by the bride, bridesmaids, and flower girls.  Hey, don't leave out the guys!  Cockades make beautiful boutonnieres.

Well, that's all for now. Of course I'll keep you up to date on the latest at my shop and my adventures.  Remember free shipping continues through January 5, 2011!

More to come soon,

xoxo
