If you are looking for the perfect last minute gift from the heart for Mom, this is it!<br /><img src="http://www.marthastewart.com/sites/files/marthastewart.com/imagecache/wmax-570/contributor-imagesw/washi-tape-hand-04-15_sq.jpg" /><div>
<br />Available in every size imaginable and willing and able to solve numerous design and organization challenges, trays are one of my favorite go-to pieces for keeping my home in tip-top shape. To pay a small tribute to this hardworking household problem solver, I created a fun and easy DIY to turn a plain old serving tray into a home-decor stunner. All you need is a little bit of time, some basic supplies, and a few rolls of washi tape! If you are new to washi tape, welcome aboard! We use it for just about everything in our home, from hanging kids' artwork to prettying up packages and creating indoor hopscotch boards on a rainy day. Washi tape is fun, easy to use and remove, and simply beautiful.<br /><br /> <br /><img src="http://www.marthastewart.com/sites/files/marthastewart.com/imagecache/wmax-570/contributor-imagesd/diy-washi-tape-scissors-04-15_sq.jpg" /><br />MATERIALS:<br /><br />- serving tray (I purchased a very basic plastic tray from a local home-goods store)<br /><br />- two rolls of different patterned or colored washi tape (I used two different width tapes with different patterns). <br /><br />- <a href="http://www.anrdoezrs.net/links/7250796/type/dlg/http://www.michaels.com/martha-stewart-crafts%C2%AE-all-purpose-scissors/10420505.html">scissors</a><br /><br />- ruler<br /><br />- sharp pencil<br /><br />- household cleaner and cloth wipe</div>
<div>
<br /><img src="http://www.marthastewart.com/sites/files/marthastewart.com/imagecache/wmax-570/contributor-imagesd/diy-ruler-tray-black-04-15_sq.jpg" /><br /><br />Step 1: <br /><br />Prepare your tray. Washi tape will stick well to most surfaces, but you will want to make sure your tray is clean before beginning this project. Spray your tray with a little household cleaner to remove any oils and wipe dry with a cloth towel. <br /><br /> <br /><br />Step 2:<br /><br />Measure your tray. To create the geometric shapes in this project I made several measurements across my tray. You can use pieces of washi tape like I did to mark your measurements. The spacing is what's important. We are going to be measuring in half, then half again. First find the middle of your tray and mark the middle with a piece of tape. Next find the middle of each half of your tray and mark with tape again. </div>
<div>
<br /><img src="http://www.marthastewart.com/sites/files/marthastewart.com/imagecache/wmax-570/contributor-imagesd/diy-tray-chevron-04-15_sq.jpg" /><br /><br />Step 3:<br /><br />Make your first triangle! Cut a piece of tape that runs the entire length of your tray. Place the bottom of the tape along the leftmost marker on your tray. Angle the tape and bring it toward the center point at the top of the tray. Repeat on the other side, starting with the right-most marker.<br /><img src="http://www.marthastewart.com/sites/files/marthastewart.com/imagecache/wmax-570/contributor-imagesd/diy-geometric-tray-04-15_sq.jpg" /><br /><br />Step 4:<br /><br />Repeat step 3 with your other roll of washi tape, but this time make a smaller triangle inside the large. Don't worry about the excess tape. I'll show you how to get nice clean cuts in step 5!<br /><img src="http://www.marthastewart.com/sites/files/marthastewart.com/imagecache/wmax-570/contributor-imagesd/diy-washi-tape-geometric-tray-04-15_sq.jpg" /><br /><br />Step 5:<br /><br />It's time to tidy up your tape. To get clean-cut and neat angles, take a sharp pencil and run it along the top of your tape to mark where you need to cut. Lift the edge of your tape off the tray and cut the tape along your pencil line.</div>
<div>
<br /><img src="http://www.marthastewart.com/sites/files/marthastewart.com/imagecache/wmax-570/contributor-imagesd/diy-washi-tape-black-tray-chevron_sq.jpg" /><br /><br />Step 6:<br /><br />To place your final two triangles, turn your tray around and make fresh measurements, following step 2. Once you have your last two triangles taped and in place follow step 5 to tidy up your tape. <br /><img src="http://www.marthastewart.com/sites/files/marthastewart.com/imagecache/wmax-570/contributor-imagesd/diy-washi-tape-tray-chevron-04-15_sq.jpg" /><br /><br />Your new tray is ready to rock breakfast in bed, your coffee table, and turn your junk mail from drab to fab!</div>

I wanted to create a fun and easy project that would celebrate my favorite colors of the spring season and give Easter dinner guests a little something sweet to take home besides the classic chocolate bunny.<br />
<br /><br /><br /><br /><img src="http://www.marthastewart.com/sites/files/marthastewart.com/imagecache/wmax-570/contributor-imagesp/pastel-clothespins-easter-0315_sq.jpg" /><br /><br />These are super easy to make and your guests will have a little keepsake at the end of the meal. Clothespins have never looked so chic.<div>

MATERIALS<br /><br />- <a href="http://www.anrdoezrs.net/links/7250796/type/dlg/http://www.michaels.com/msc-satin-acrylic-craft-paint/M10198119.html">Martha Stewart Craft Paints</a><br /><br />- paint palette<br /><br />- 10 old-fashioned wooden clothespins<br /><br /> - baker's twine <br /><br />- 1 spice jar per paint color (for filling with paint and dipping)<br /><br />- 2 mason jars (for using as support to hang dipped pins)<br /><br />- 1 drinking straw<br /><br />- Washi tape or masking tape<br /><br />- 10 cloth napkins<br /><br />- <a href="http://www.anrdoezrs.net/links/7250796/type/dlg/http://www.michaels.com/martha-stewart-crafts%C2%AE-all-purpose-scissors/10420505.html">scissors</a><br /><br />- 9 yards of cotton ribbon<br /><br />- 10 place-setting cards</div>
<div>
<br /><img src="http://www.marthastewart.com/sites/files/marthastewart.com/imagecache/wmax-570/contributor-imagesp/pastel-paint-0315_sq.jpg" /><br /><br /></div>
<div>
Step 1:<br /><br />Prepare your paint. Decide on at least 5 different colors for your paint-dipped clothespins. I used a mixing palette to add a little white to each of my chosen colors to make the paint thicker and more opaque. <br /><br /> <br /><br />Step 2: <br /><br />Tie a piece of baker's twine around the top of your clothespin -- make sure you tie a bow (and not a knot) so that it's easy to untie later. Pour your first paint color into a clean spice jar. Pour enough paint so that when you dip your clothespin in the paint covers about half of it.</div>
<div>
<br /><img src="http://www.marthastewart.com/sites/files/marthastewart.com/imagecache/wmax-570/contributor-imagesp/pastel-paint-315_sq.jpg" /><br /><br /></div>
<div>
Step 3:<br /><br />Prep your drying area. I made a makeshift drying rack from a set of mason jars, a drinking straw and some washi tape. Set two mason jars on a flat surface. Tape a drinking straw across the top of the jars so you have a place to hang the wet clothespins. <br /><br /> <br /><br />Step 4: <br /><br />Dip! Once your drying area and paint jar are ready, it's time to dip. With a steady hand, lower a clothespin into the paint until it touches the bottom of the jar. Let the clothespin sit in the paint for a few seconds, then lift up. Wrap the baker's twine around the straw on your drying rack and tape down with some washi tape. </div>
<div>
<br /><img src="http://www.marthastewart.com/sites/files/marthastewart.com/imagecache/wmax-570/contributor-imagesp/p1130244_copy_sq.jpg" /><br /><br /></div>
<div>
Step 5:<br /><br />Let dry. Allow your dipped clothespins to dry for at least 2 hours before taking them off the drying rack. Allow them to dry overnight before creating the napkin rings and place settings. <br /><br /> <br /><br />Step 6:<br /><br />Fold your napkins. For this project, I folded my dinner napkins in thirds and then in half. You can get creative with the folding if you'd like.<br /><br /> <br /><br />Step 7:<br /><br />Cut and tie your ribbon. For my napkins I needed about 20 inches of ribbon per napkin to create a side bow. Place the ribbon underneath the napkin and tie a bow in the front. I placed mine to the side, but you can mix it up by tying the bow in the middle. A middle bow is perfect if you are not using place cards. </div>
<div>
<br /><img src="http://www.marthastewart.com/sites/files/marthastewart.com/imagecache/wmax-570/contributor-imagese/easter-placesetting-pastel-0315_sq.jpg" /><br /><br /></div>
<div>
Step 8:<br /><br />Write the names on your place cards. I used a chalk pencil, but pen or maker, even paint would be a nice touch. <br /><br /> <br /><br />Step 9: <br /><br />Once you have created your place cards, gently slide a clothespin over the tied ribbon. On the underside of the ribbon, slide your place card, so it is centered underneath the clothespin. Repeat for each place setting.</div>
<div>
<br /><img src="http://www.marthastewart.com/sites/files/marthastewart.com/imagecache/wmax-570/contributor-imagesp/pastel-clothespin-0315_sq.jpg" /><br /><br />Now your table is ready to welcome spring in style! Don't forget to invite your Easter dinner guests to take their pretty pastel clothespins home with them! </div>

This post first appeared on <a href="http://www.marthastewart.com/1102989/lisa-congdon-how-i-became-self-employed-artist" target="_blank">Martha Stewart Living</a>, where I am a West Coast Expert and Contributor. This past January I attended <a href="http://altitudesummit.com/" target="_blank">Alt Summit</a>, a bi-annual conference for bloggers and creative entrepreneurs. I caught up with keynote speaker Artist and illustrator Lisa Congdon to learn more about her process and how she got started. You can read my full recap of the conference <a href="http://zelmarose.blogspot.com/2015/01/an-open-letter-to-alt-summit.html" target="_blank">here</a>. </div>

With a captive audience of 600-plus at this past January's Alt Summit, keynote speaker <a href="http://lisacongdon.com/blog/about/">Lisa Congdon</a> reminded the group of eager bloggers and entrepreneurs that when it comes to being busy, she "chose this." As a renowned fine artist and illustrator, Lisa Congdon has an impressive collection of work including books, paintings, prints, wallpaper, and tea towels. Let's just say she is well-versed in the life of a self-employed artist. One of her most recent books, "<a href="http://lisacongdon.com/blog/2014/05/art-inc-advances-are-here/">Art Inc., The Essential Guide to Building Your Career as an Artist</a>," is an illuminating instructional on how to get started and thrive as a business-minded fine artist. I interviewed Lisa after her keynote speech to learn a little bit more about how she got started and what has inspired her journey.<div>

<br />IF YOU COULD GIVE YOURSELF ONE PIECE OF ADVICE WHEN YOU STARTED YOUR BUSINESS, WHAT WOULD IT HAVE BEEN?<br /><br />Build and steer your own boat. In the beginning of my own career I was so convinced that in order to be successful, I needed to be a new version of the artists I admired or regurgitate a trend report. I thought that's how it worked for everyone, especially in the world of illustration. But that only made me miserable. It took me a few years to realize I just needed to make my own work and to be myself. It was developing my own voice that made me successful and to feel gratified in my career.<div>

<br /><br /><div>
WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST OBSTACLE IN TALKING TO PEOPLE ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS OR YOURSELF? HOW HAVE YOU WORKED TO OVERCOME IT?<br /><br />For many years, I didn't feel legitimate as an artist -- because I both was self-taught and didn't start drawing or painting until I was 31. I felt like I walked into a party I wasn't invited to and that I'd get kicked out eventually. So in the beginning I was really apologetic about my success. I felt I didn't deserve it. Eventually I just got tired of feeling anxious about my legitimacy -- it was exhausting me! I began to own my journey and feel good about who I was and the work I was making.</div>

<br /></div>
<br />WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START YOUR BUSINESS?<br /><br />I made art as a hobby when I first started out, and it was the kind words of other people that changed everything for me. I also became inspired by the idea of being my own boss. I'd worked in an office for many years and had come to a point where I felt like an automaton -- someone whose life included getting up, going to work and sitting in front of a computer all day. I wanted out of that. I wanted to get up and draw and paint all day, so eventually I figured out how to get paid for it.<br /><br /> <br /><br />A special thank-you to Lisa for sharing her insights and inspiration. Her next book, "Fortune Favors the Brave," is due out in the Fall of 2015. That album of course was Pearl Jam Ten. I loved it immediately, and then of course once this teenage girl saw a photo of Eddie Vedder, well, the whole Seattle sound was a pretty easy sell. The meaning of this album has changed a lot for me over the years. Starting out as an angst driven teenage anthem, now it remains in rotation as just a really solid rock album. All the songs are great, with Evenflow coming in as an all time favorite track. While I was running around in the oversized flannel and doc martens back in the day, I'd like to think now I'd choose a slightly more mature take on the look. Here's what I would wear now, when calling up my days as a 90's flannel wearing free spirit. </div>

Her set sits on my desk and after spending so much time with them last week, I was inspired to create a silhouette from one of my grandfather's tools that also sits on my desk. Much like Zelma's scissors, I use Kingston's wooden ruler every day.<br />

<br />
Okay, let me break it down for you...<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
1. Let's talk denim. Once, a long time ago, before I was a mom and worked in a fancy office downtown, I used to own a single pair of jeans. Why bother with more when I spent 5 days a week wearing impossibly gorgeous dresses and wiggle skirts? Life is different now, thank goodness, and denim has become a uniform. I have tried a lot of different brands and hands down my favorite is <a href="https://www.madewell.com/madewell_category/DENIMBAR/alleystraight/PRDOVR~B1061/B1061.jsp" target="_blank">Madewell</a>. They don't sag, are easy to bend and move in and wash really well. Plus, the sizes run true across styles. My personal favorite cut is the Alley Straight, but I also own the Skinny Skinny in a few different rinses as well. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
2. The best tank ever. This will probably blow your mind, but the best tank top you've never tried is maternity. No joke.<a href="http://www.target.com/p/maternity-fashion-tank-top-liz-lange-for-target/-/A-15008910" target="_blank"> Liz Lange for Target</a> makes the best tank top around. It's long, really long. Super soft, and has incredible stretch. Seriously this thing is like a rubber band. The key to the perfect fit? Buy it really small. I wear xs, or xxs. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
3. About face. Finding <a href="http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=408708&aid=336064&aparam=egyptian%20magic&scinit1=egyptian%20magic&gclid=Cj0KEQiAuremBRCbtr-1qJnKi-4BEiQAh0x08GU-GL0EmiBpUpTFvzm5ZjdPJad2tkk2ISovZgESajoaArWX8P8HAQ" target="_blank">Egyptian Magic</a> was kind of an accident. I has received a sample in a BirchBox subscritpion a friend had given me for Christmas last year. I had put it in my purse figuring if I ever forgot my lip gloss, or I needed some balm or lotion for my daughter, I would have a back up. Well one day I needed it, and surprisingly it ended up changing my skin for the better. The best skin cream I have ever used by far, Egyptian Magic is an all natural moisturizer that melts into your skin. We use it for everything in our house, face, body, cuts, dry skin, everything. It works like a charm and is available at Costco. It doesn't really get any better. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
4. <a href="http://www.smashbox.com/product/6128/21835/Multi-use/SMASHBOX-CAMERA-READY-BB-CREAM-BROAD-SPECTRUM-SPF-35/Studio-Artist-Favorite/index.tmpl" target="_blank">Smashbox BB cream</a>. I'm a huge fan of Smashbox. It's the only makeup I use. This BB cream is a quick and effective way to give your skin a little bit of coverage while fitting in a quality spectrum SPF. This cream goes on smooth, with a light dusting of power will last most of the day, and gives the skin that dewy glow.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
5. Oh baby! I am not a lipstick person. I don't really like it. I save lipstick for special occasions and date night. All I really want on my lips is a nice fresh pop of subtle color that feels soft and keeps my lips moisturized. I've tried a number of different glosses, but I keep coming back to <a href="http://www.smashbox.com/product/6123/17788/Lips/Lip-Gloss/O-GLOSS-INTUITIVE-LIP-GLOSS/index.tmpl" target="_blank">Smashbox O - Gloss</a>. This magical little tube intuitively flushes your lips with the perfect shade of pink to compliment your skin tone. It's the perfect amount of color for me day or night, and I keep one in about every bag I own. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
6. Best foot forward. I bought my first pair of Danskos when I worked on a locked psychiatric unit. I was on my feet a lot, and needed to be able to move quickly and easily. A lot of the nurses on the unit wore Danskos and I figure they had to know thing or two about comfort. Since then I'm only on my second pair. They last forever, can go the distance in terms of comfort, and now a days are pretty darn cute. I love these <a href="http://www.dansko.com/Womens/Footwear/Styles/Clogs/Maria/Taupe%20Milled%20Nubuck/" target="_blank">Maria</a> boots and will be wearing them as long as Dansko keeps making them. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
7. Sun kissed. If you are wondering how to get amazing cheekbones, the key is a good bronzer. Bronzer is the secret to making you look like you got 8 hours sleep instead of 4. Yeah, it's that good. I love this <a href="http://www.smashbox.com/product/6033/17761/Face/Bronzer/BAKED-FUSION-SOFT-LIGHTS/index.tmpl" target="_blank">Smashbox</a> pressed bronzer to give my skin a little boost. A quick brush along the cheekbones, at the top of the hairline and bottom of the chin leaves you looking like you had all afternoon to get a facial. I also apply it to my lids for a light sparkle above my eye. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
8. Oh my god I love this underwear. <a href="http://www.ae.com/aerie/browse/product.jsp?productId=1777_5515_890&catId=cat6630051" target="_blank">Aerie</a> has managed to make the perfect thong hipster hybrid. The lace Mini Cheeky offers more coverage than a thong but provides the same discreet coverage in tight fitting clothes. Best part? It actually stays put. I don't know how they did it. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Any of these must haves make your can't live without list? </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
What has you buying in bulk these days?</div>

A friend is currently working on a book project and asked to borrow some of Zelma's swimming medals, which had me digging through a box of old jewelry and knick knacks. Zelma among other things was an incredible athlete and has a host of Lifeguard pins and Public School Athletic League awards from Jamaica High School in Queens, New York. While I don't often look at my grandmother's medals, I do use her scissors every single day. I inherited a beautiful set that sits on my desk, and when not in use, sit along side her husband, Kingston's wooden ruler.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Dear Alt Summit,</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Thank you. This seems small in retrospect, as I am unsure how to put words to the incredible feeling of being in a room full of brilliant, successful, and endlessly brave women. Maybe it is simply to be in awe. Whatever the case, I always return home floating on air. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We are mothers, daughters, and partners and creative powerhouses dancing through this hustle, that as keynote speaker <a href="http://lisacongdon.com/" target="_blank">Lisa Congdon</a> so wisely pointed out, we have chosen. Yes, chosen. So what exactly have we chosen?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I think everyone at Alt would have a different answer. For some it is to provide for our family, to be at home with our kids, to follow our passion, to not be held back promotionally or monetarily in a still male dominated and unequal workforce, to run the show, or to simply, as <a href="http://freshlypicked.com/" target="_blank">Freshly Picked</a> CEO Susan Petersen put, "to be able to go to Target and buy anything I want." </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We choose to be brave. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After my 4th Alt, and my second as a speaker, I think it is this choice that binds us. The commonality that connects the freelance photographer to the mommy blogger, the DIY crafter to the fashion stylist. We all at some point decided that no matter the circumstances, <b>WE</b> had a choice and were going to make one. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Sounds simple, but choice is a leap, a risk, a run full speed to the edge of a steep cliff and a deep trust that once you leap, you will start to fly. I don't think any of us knew for certain when we took that leap that we would spread our wings, but we did it anyway, and we have soared. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For me, the initial choice came from a feeling that I had nothing left to lose. When Zelma Rose came to be, I was reeling from a number of grief stricken years. Family deaths, a sick pet, and a yearning so deep in my heart to become a mother, it practically paralyzed me. But grief is a great teacher. It hurts and it's awful, but it brings your life, your breath, front and center. I know now that grief is the tension of the arrow being pulled back taut across the bow, waiting for flight. It strains and is exhausting but if you can be with it and in it with all of yourself you can not only move forward, but soar with great strength and direction. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
At Alt last week I saw all parts of the arrow. For some it was being pulled back tight across the bow, others were taking aim, and many had just released the arrow, watching it speed through the air with great determination. Being around this energy and hope is what drives us to make the choice to pick up the bow and arrow over and over again until we hit our target. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When I look now at my daughter, my husband, and my business, I know it was this moment of choice and the bravery to step to the edge and leap that has given me the life I always dreamed. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
To you, the women of Alt, I thank you for making it look easy, hard, exciting, exhausting, joyful, and sorrowful to make that choice. It is a gift that we can all continue to do it together. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Until next year,</div>

I was, and remain a Dead Head. While I am a purist and believe that the only way to really listen to the Dead is live, albums were the way I discovered the Dead as a kid. American Beauty was my first Dead experience and to be honest I didn't know what to think. The music didn't make much sense to me. It sounded like a bunch of lullabies and when I saw what they looked like, well then I was totally confused. Still, I knew there was something there and as I got older and went to my first Dead show, well the rest is history.<br />

With 50 years coming around the bend, it's safe to say that the Dead changed the face of music. I'm all for celebrating the authentic and few do it better than our very own NorCal grown. Congrats boys, and thanks for the memories. Wish all of you could here to say, "Fare thee well," one last time.<br />

With so much to look at, I'm enjoying taking a closer and more isolated look at each leaf and bloom.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This week I decided to focus on a leaf from one of the Bird of Paradise plants that grow beneath a set of our kitchen windows. With a few of the flowers in bloom, it seems a bit odd that a leave is what drew my attention, but I was interested in the different textures and how this would translate into a flat silhouette.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I was surprised by the results, as the curve of the leaf, which I was so drawn to seems to get a bit lost in translation. I like the way the drastic change in texture and color from green to brown is seen as only holes in the leaf in this form.</div>

But then again, I am a fan of us gingers. Still he's got a great voice, a humble presence and for a young guy, he can really write a song. His album X, or pronounced "multiply," for reasons I'm assuming I'm not cool enough to understand, is not the kind of music I usually have playing in the studio. I'm more of a sex, drugs, and rock n' roll kind of listener when it comes to my choice of office music. This week for whatever reason I was thinking ahead to spring and just wanted something pleasant that I could sing along to and let my mind just go. This album does the trick for me. The songs are well written, not over produced, even the single Sing, which is kind of fancy, does not reek of studio execs cramming strange manufactured noises into our ears.<br />

X has all the qualities of spring for me right now. And listening to it this week brought me back to those carefree days and nights spent at the beach, running the waves and just being glad to be in someones arms. So if you are wishing for a little sun, have a listen to some Ed Sheeran and get yourself somewhere that denim shorts and tees are all you need.<br />

I am far from a gardener and for the most part have a black thumb as opposed to a green one, but succulents and cacti seem to do pretty well under my care.<br />

This is a great way to make sure every piece in your closet is in tip top shape, clean, and fits properly. We are all busy, and as conferences and celebratory events come into play, it's great knowing that your suit fits and is ready to be packed and hop on a plane. I pulled together some of my favorite basics for below to give you fellas a rough idea of what should be in your closet.<br />

<br />
Also of importance each year is keeping your health in check. Annual medical appointments like physicals, skin cancer screenings, and eye exams should be repeated each year or every few years depending upon your doctors recommendations. To keep all of this info in check, I am sharing with you my own personal set of checklists to keep you organized and looking good throughout the year. You can download your own Zelma Rose 2015 Style Guide Checklist for Him, <a href="https://www.dropbox.com/s/ae8d3ao1hp4o5ab/ZR2015STYLECHECKLISTHIM.pdf?dl=0" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />

<br />
When it comes to being sized for clothing, I suggest being fitted for suits, dress shirts, and shoes each year. You would be surprised how often our sizes change. Whether it is due to exercise, weight loss or weight gain, or the brand we like changing their size. Keeping up to date on your sizing makes last minute and online shopping a breeze. I like <a href="http://shop.nordstrom.com/" target="_blank">Nordstrom</a> for fittings for both men and women. The Men's department at Nordstrom is a great place to get your shirt and jacket measurements. The shoe department also has a wonderfully professional staff that can measure your foot and help you get into a properly fitting pair of shoes.<br />
<br />
Over the next weeks, I'll be sharing some of my favorite Men's basics and I would love to hear yours!<br />

In 1987, U2 released Joshua Tree and I was pretty convinced at the young age of 11, that Bono would someday be my husband. With or Without You became the song that I would run to the stereo as it neared conclusion to rewind over and over again. I'm surprised my tape cassette didn't wear out. Wait, what's a cassette?<br />

<br />
This album remains in my top, if I'm ever stranded on a desert island, list of favorites. Somehow it never grows old and maybe because I still get that feeling of teen longing when I hear With or Without You. As an adult, Red Hill Mining Town has become my favorite track on the album and when I listen to it in the car, my daughter and I belt out the chorus as loud as we can.<br />
<br />
I think mostly this is an album of passion. I can hear it in the voices, the instruments and the beautifully woven lyrics. It's a powerhouse. Living in California and spending time in Joshua Tree, it makes even more sense. The quiet space, beautiful desert. It really takes you somewhere.<br />
<br />
U2 forever.<br />
<br />
What are you listening to?<br />

I know it sounds weird, I am a maker by trade, how is that not art? And it is, but sometimes my life in the studio is a lot more about business and practicality than it is about just freely exploring a medium. One of my promises to myself in the new year was to allow some time each week to just be in the studio and create freely.<br />

One of the things that inspires me each morning is the sunrise. My studio windows face east and I watch the sun come up over the mountains each day. On the foggy days it is like watching the light pass over a thin veil of silk. Each tree is outlined in silhouette form and the mountains create a jagged line across the sky. I have always enjoyed silhouettes, even as a child, fascinated by the ones my mom had made of our family members.<br />
<br />
Inspired by looking closely at objects in their most basic form, I decided to create a weekly silhouette throughout the year. You will be able to join me here on the blog each week for photos of the finished piece and process, as well as participate on Instagram by <a href="http://instagram.com/zelmarose" target="_blank">following</a> along and posting your own creations with the hashtag #52silhouettes.<br />

Below is my first silhouette. It is of an antler that my husband found while walking the grounds at our home before we moved in. I look at it on our fireplace mantle everyday and love the simple curves and delicate intricacies of its shape.<br />

With some much needed time off around the holidays, I like to not only review my goals and dreams for the new year, but I also like to get my house in order. Part of getting life back on track and ready for the next 365 days no doubt includes taking stock of your wellness and wardrobe. (I pulled together some of my favorite staples below).<br />

<br />
I start each year with a handy checklist to keep track of my necessary annual medical appoints, my wardrobe, and all those little things we forget about. Nothing like packing the night before a conference to realize your tights have a huge hole in them! Let's avoid that mess, please. By annually recording your sizes, and double checking the items in your wardrobe, you give yourself a single place to reference what you have, what needs to be replaced, and must be repaired. This year, I'm excited to share with you my very own checklist template! You can download it <a href="https://www.dropbox.com/s/dgviqw0khsm7wm5/ZR2015STYLEGUIDEHER.pdf?dl=0" target="_blank">here. </a><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
The checklist covers everything from your annual medical visits, to lists of basic wardrobe items, and lots of space for notes. I do not own everything on this list, so don't get too overwhelmed, and I'm not suggesting you run out and check off each item. Simply mark what you have and what you need to replace. I included on the list getting fitted for a bra and shoes. If you have kids then you know these sizes change a lot over the years. Scary but true, so good to get things properly measured each year. <a href="http://nordstrom.com/" target="_blank">Nordstrom</a> offers free bra fittings, along with a knowledgeable shoe department that can help you find a properly fitting shoe.<br />
<br />
I find the most valuable part of this list to be where I note the brand, size and style. When a brand I wear is having a sale I can quickly reference what size and style I like. Also, it makes for easy gifting. My man can look at the list, see what stores I like and what sizes I wear and presto, the perfect gift!<br />
<br />
I will be sharing some of my favorite picks from my own list over the next few weeks. Also, next Monday I will share the Zelma Rose 2015 Style Guide for Him. That's right guys, you get your very own checklist!<br />
<br />
Hope you are off to a wonderful 2015!<br />
<br />
Have fun with the Style Guide and comment below with your own favorite wardrobe basics, I'll be sharing mine soon!<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Inspiration for this project came from the joy of receiving such beautiful holiday cards this time of year and the frustration of being unable to find something fun to do with them after the holidays! This year we decided to host a crafternoon on New Year's Day and invite our friends and family over for some food, fun, and a little craftiness. I found these great invites over at <a href="http://www.tinyprints.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Tiny Prints</a>, and loved the antler motif so much, a DIY was born! </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div>
To get started you will need to gather the supplies listed above. I encourage you to go ahead and purchase <a href="http://www.dickblick.com/products/yes-stikflat-glue/" target="_blank">Yes Paste</a>. I love this stuff. It is not well known, but it works beautifully with paper and a little bit will go a long way. I also recommend using sharp scissors. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFzhL0boFF5_rAbQ_XFhKAF8aP8KiQMdf0n_GS3ZLd2wToGqy3m5dS8a9bsTdCCPcTZmRafjiIIe_QxRGwPiv20HA93arLP5-4WsCgYxV8sFhQicMxJ0RDpkr4_z75nmat8t-j993iP0tq/s1600/IMG_9529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFzhL0boFF5_rAbQ_XFhKAF8aP8KiQMdf0n_GS3ZLd2wToGqy3m5dS8a9bsTdCCPcTZmRafjiIIe_QxRGwPiv20HA93arLP5-4WsCgYxV8sFhQicMxJ0RDpkr4_z75nmat8t-j993iP0tq/s1600/IMG_9529.jpg" height="640" width="488" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
First you will want to create an antler template. I made mine by drawing a larger version of the antler shown on the crafternoon invitation. You may want to draw your own, or you can print out the photo below and size it to your liking, then trace with pencil onto card stock or a holiday card. Putting the card on top of your antler and placing them both over a sunny window works great to get an accurate tracing. When sizing your antler, keep in mind, the finished wreath as shown is 8 inches in diameter.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiT9KmdQcJklqJ6ZamGuQrA5z7ApmtQhzzwRFnCBexHzeGVXt_La2CF9vbpbU5bwYFbeg2N6WQP65JICQyeec-1bqPklPfHBEbr3M8LZZ_mZiHXPovidnDg6v_MNRd6kGbzD6DcNknFlNEb/s1600/IMG_9550.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiT9KmdQcJklqJ6ZamGuQrA5z7ApmtQhzzwRFnCBexHzeGVXt_La2CF9vbpbU5bwYFbeg2N6WQP65JICQyeec-1bqPklPfHBEbr3M8LZZ_mZiHXPovidnDg6v_MNRd6kGbzD6DcNknFlNEb/s1600/IMG_9550.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div>
Once you have a template, you will trace it on top of your holiday cards, then cut. You will need to be sure to trace your template on both sides so you have finished antlers pointing in both directions. I used 10 antlers in my finished wreath. </div>
<div>

After you trace and cut your antlers you will need to prepare some paste. Put a very small amount on the tip of a short haired paint brush. As you lay out your antlers, brush a small amount of paste on the back of the top antler and lay it flat on to the bottom one. Work your way around switching from side to side into a circle.</div>

The last step is to take your ribbon and tie a bow to paste in the middle. Brush a small amount of paste on the back of each loop of the bow and lay flat on the ends of the antlers at the bottom of the wreath. Allow your wreath to lay flat for about 2 hours or so. Yes Paste stays flexible for several hours and will need time to set. </div>

I love a good DIY and this time of year a do it yourself project can not only yield a thoughtful gift, but can be a great opportunity to gather your friends and family together for a fun crafternoon. One of my favorite parts of being a creative entrepreneur in the Bay area is that there are so many wonderfully imaginative people to collaborate with. For this project I teamed up with my pal and fellow creative entrepreneur <a href="http://madelinetrait.com/" target="_blank">Madeline Trait</a>. Madeline pulled together a great post of this DIY for Martha Stewart herself. You can check it out <a href="http://www.marthastewart.com/1095259/diy-statement-necklace" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />

<br />
Madeline and I formally met last year, but I had been a fan of her beautiful hand painted <a href="http://madelinetrait.com/caketoppers/" target="_blank">cake toppers</a> for years. With a similar design aesthetic, attention to detail and love of laughter, Madeline and I became instant friends. We were searching for a project to work on together and when she told me about this incredible Marimekko fabric covered necklace she had, well it was easy to get inspired. With our love of vibrant prints leading the way, we created this fun DIY that in 90 minutes has you looking like a fashion forward, femme fatale. <br />
<br />
YOU WILL NEED:<br />
<br />
90 Minutes<br />
Fabric at least 1 yard<br />
Embroidery thread<br />
Wooden Beads - We used 1" and 3/4" but you can choose any size you like.<br />
Scissors<br />
Needle<br />
Iron<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXijoPNesdIuoQn6hG9nH9IzNT4a76s0iJXgd7hbJfAubZ28Mt-K8unnRqoXmSXwkL5KgXzRbTEQdZcLaYE976XiGziVCKqR0j7jnielg_uwQB1p-OMBwVGbA7AuU70xJmKB6zL_sAPPB5/s1600/P1120334.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXijoPNesdIuoQn6hG9nH9IzNT4a76s0iJXgd7hbJfAubZ28Mt-K8unnRqoXmSXwkL5KgXzRbTEQdZcLaYE976XiGziVCKqR0j7jnielg_uwQB1p-OMBwVGbA7AuU70xJmKB6zL_sAPPB5/s400/P1120334.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Step 1. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div>
Cut your fabric into strips. For 1" beads the fabric needs to be 2.5" wide. For the 3/4" beads the fabric needs to be 2" wide. All strips should be no shorter than 30". The length of the strip determines how long your necklace will be. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7GghSweqlmTV-Qnshj5c2Ml3TDutfnpCsOp0tjAK-kFLX-sFWlMnrp3iGk5wGRbBIuTbBagMhf7zq76CKB701Ox5JxHuRs0I8zbN9_7qO3XOJ2r36zFnW7QzdaoxZ2D5GRK6vBaIqF9T6/s1600/P1120342.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7GghSweqlmTV-Qnshj5c2Ml3TDutfnpCsOp0tjAK-kFLX-sFWlMnrp3iGk5wGRbBIuTbBagMhf7zq76CKB701Ox5JxHuRs0I8zbN9_7qO3XOJ2r36zFnW7QzdaoxZ2D5GRK6vBaIqF9T6/s400/P1120342.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Step 2. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
With a hot iron, create a 1/4" hem on both sides of your fabric strip.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmDRqigixQW1Uf6zATMimjlba9oyX4hs_Z6FnD-uStzuh9dytNvPfM488oPnsbZcUcK28a3GO51UapK23rl9tYoAgorLDTAzqb9HrFSdhj2RnxbcMxHmQK5n8aBOpbZFW1AUKdgq62V6Ki/s1600/P1120346.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="285" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmDRqigixQW1Uf6zATMimjlba9oyX4hs_Z6FnD-uStzuh9dytNvPfM488oPnsbZcUcK28a3GO51UapK23rl9tYoAgorLDTAzqb9HrFSdhj2RnxbcMxHmQK5n8aBOpbZFW1AUKdgq62V6Ki/s400/P1120346.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Step 3.<br />
<br />
This is the fun part! To add your first bead, find the center of your fabric strip by folding it in half length wise. Next place your first bead in the center of the fabric strip and wrap the fabric entirely around the bead. Once the bead is completely covered in fabric you will secure either end with embroidery thread. Put your needle through the fabric to secure it tight, wrap it around several times and then knot it at the end. You will repeat this step until all your beads are covered.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTbL7U4tyEUPfNgsKsukc63oK9tNghDBuBZP2WJwquB_nmYmWDxS5Nha5A_LsBq8pQ1UpdEMMpQQDq4-XEGiiLoWiggijqMsbcs3yc1VYb9RywvhLK4EBL2YHZsLdRfxTkQYtQan6dxDmz/s1600/process2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTbL7U4tyEUPfNgsKsukc63oK9tNghDBuBZP2WJwquB_nmYmWDxS5Nha5A_LsBq8pQ1UpdEMMpQQDq4-XEGiiLoWiggijqMsbcs3yc1VYb9RywvhLK4EBL2YHZsLdRfxTkQYtQan6dxDmz/s640/process2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Step 4.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
To finish the necklace, tie remaining loose fabric into knots and then knot both sides together. You can also cut the remaining loose fabric into 3 strips to braid and then knot at the end. We did both. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

With the holidays fast approaching, it's time to get started on your holiday gift list. With a little time off and a chance to get out with the family, I like to get a start on my holiday shopping around Thanksgiving. This year I wanted to give my friends and family gifts that were not only useful, but also thoughtful and really personalized. Custom gifts have standout sentiment for any occasion and taking the time to create special personalized designs not only feels good, but looks good too! To inspire your gift giving this season, I pulled together 4 of my favorite custom gift ideas perfect for family and friends. All useful, stylish, and thoughtful, everyone will be enjoying these throughout the year!<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Personalized Stationary</div>
<div>
<br /></div>

<br />
<div>
My first favorite custom gift to give and receive is personalized stationary. I found the beautiful note cards above at <a href="http://www.tinyprints.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Tiny Prints</a>, and added some colorful card stock, pencils and ribbon to complete the set. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Thank You Cards</div>
<div>

<br /></div>

<br />
<div>
If there is one thing everyone can use this time of year, it's Thank You cards. I wanted to put a different spin on the standard thank you and found these personalized state greetings <a href="http://www.tinyprints.com/product/52615/personal_stationery_slated_state__west.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">postcards</a>. Each card can be customised with a different state and icons of your choice. I of course chose California, and added the heart over the Bay Area, along with our name. Add in some matching pencils and a few cute gift wrap items and you've got the perfect gift!<br />
<div>
<br />
<div>
Kitchen Cook's Notebook</div>
<div>

<br />
<div>
Notebooks make a great gift, especially for the busy family. This gift idea was inspired by my friends who like to spend their time on the kitchen. Notebooks can be particularly handy in the kitchen, for collecting recipes, writing down ingredients, taking cooking notes, and making grocery lists. I customized this colorful notebook with the new year and added some card stock envelopes and recipe cards that can be taped to the inside pages to hold notes and clippings. Two beautiful pencils and a few jingle bells later, and your gift is ready to wow! </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Hostess Gift</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

</tbody></table>
<br />
<div>
One of the best parts of the holiday season is parties! Bringing a personalized gift to the host or hostess makes an especially thoughtful gift. Consider forgoing the standard bottle of wine or candle this year and opt for a custom notepad and ornament. I added the host's last name to the notepad above and chose a favorite location as the custom ornament. Remember, not all custom gifts need to be personalized with a family photo or name. Sometimes a shared joke or favorite quote makes a custom gift extra special. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
However you choose to celebrate this season, I wish you a wonderful week and a Thanksgiving filled with love and gratitude. And may you find time for just a little shopping :)</div>

<br />
When we moved to our new home a few months ago, like most busy new homeowners, we were overwhelmed with all of the musts. Like putting in a working stove, and updating the electric. You know the little things that you need to get through the day! Six months in and we are still hard at work with the renovation, but things are slowly starting to turn toward the details. This past weekend I finally had the time to do a little rehab on a prefab mushroom light in our hallway.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilKOLqTURXpHqgTy3LgVkwFyovOfJKGE2rV9YcRfpsGVhPTLQWsNuFrJLzeWHDd5TiDiN4PHNvj252yyKOJcT72TsVemtbMhLhs6XdN7W-VTsR4SDb802WBfM1aPEA8OXGsb23LjKJATzX/s1600/prefab1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilKOLqTURXpHqgTy3LgVkwFyovOfJKGE2rV9YcRfpsGVhPTLQWsNuFrJLzeWHDd5TiDiN4PHNvj252yyKOJcT72TsVemtbMhLhs6XdN7W-VTsR4SDb802WBfM1aPEA8OXGsb23LjKJATzX/s1600/prefab1.jpg" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As you can see above, our hallway is a unique space. Part library, part major artery, it's been necessary to keep things minimal and simple. We painted the entire home Benjamin Moore Decorator's White, and this decision was a game changer in the hallway. You would think a flat finish, bright white paint would be the kryptonite to a house with a working studio, toddler and dog, but a quick run through with a magic eraser and things look brand new. The lighting fixture in the hallway was one of those prefab mushroom lights that you often find in recently purchased homes, and rightly so. They are affordable, simple, and work well for painting, redecorating and construction. In short, they are no frills and work just fine in the interim. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
To replace the light, I wanted to keep with the library theme and also give a nod to the ceiling fans in both my studio and our bedroom, which have old fashioned school house globes. I found this great fixture on <a href="http://www.wayfair.com/Minka-Lavery-1-Light-Semi-Flush-Mount-MKL4306.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Wayfair</a>, that is a near match to the shape and style of our ceiling fan fixtures. I loved it immediately and like how it keeps with the Nordic and modern feel of our home while including a vintage vibe. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhL7BgVivHNAvKIxC5pBmpQuhQez-3khbhKpfAbqRA8VvD7j6qtvurtBtDpMeLGvIQTMXYMJZI0tVccDmk0K7uir6mnMJjxvKWfOrWufBh40qCRRMBKUb8hkJHyIHnXkanvHki52BUlNCh4/s1600/prefabrehab2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhL7BgVivHNAvKIxC5pBmpQuhQez-3khbhKpfAbqRA8VvD7j6qtvurtBtDpMeLGvIQTMXYMJZI0tVccDmk0K7uir6mnMJjxvKWfOrWufBh40qCRRMBKUb8hkJHyIHnXkanvHki52BUlNCh4/s1600/prefabrehab2.jpg" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Next on my list is to find a nice little lamp to place on the open shelf in the hallway. We often play puzzles and read in this cozy little corner and a lamp would be a welcome addition. I'm considering a few below, what do you think? </div>

Today, I'm giving my own personal take on what makes a sharp dressed man.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwMSB2pJYtlarUwZCI2b76M_UgFMuAfu6EXE0L-J1A_lstVjU58eTn-AGQQX6diQrC6N8ZMq0KPY7G-Fb8x2sBO5Jk43riYGl3MVY6K6AqG6QJpuVzzozKNefDWU2B-0a_NxLsGYvL-dNK/s1600/collage1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwMSB2pJYtlarUwZCI2b76M_UgFMuAfu6EXE0L-J1A_lstVjU58eTn-AGQQX6diQrC6N8ZMq0KPY7G-Fb8x2sBO5Jk43riYGl3MVY6K6AqG6QJpuVzzozKNefDWU2B-0a_NxLsGYvL-dNK/s1600/collage1.jpg" height="400" width="400" /></a></td></tr>

</tbody></table>
<br />
I gave an interview with <a href="http://www.goodsofrecord.com/collections/zelma-rose?utm_source=Goods+of+Record&utm_campaign=850174d06d-The_Record_29_12_2014&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_6765eb0793-850174d06d-204007613&mc_cid=850174d06d&mc_eid=1a023eaa3a#story" target="_blank">Goods of Record</a> last week and one of the founders asked me, "Why a Men's Collection?" As a woman designer, I get this question a lot. Truth be told, I love menswear. Structured suits, textured knits, leather details, and of course bow ties. It all really appeals to me and when it comes to my own closet, I am often looking for pieces that mimic the attention to tailoring and quality that is so inherent in men's fashion. Above all else, when I think about noticing a man's dress, no matter the style, it all comes down to tailoring. When it comes to being a sharp dressed man;<br />
<br />
TAILORING IS KING<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCp4VZZ8hsesp32BiQ7WgXWnDB0gpHOF07u0yvG57LcyxOTmf89_eYVIWct5rgDbYiiQVfEEGERlM6YESTrn8E05hK-m6Yt4go8zMCoM9D9OqdNshSHuTmUGfUHRCWiXH4IsOma5FR3N-s/s1600/mens.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCp4VZZ8hsesp32BiQ7WgXWnDB0gpHOF07u0yvG57LcyxOTmf89_eYVIWct5rgDbYiiQVfEEGERlM6YESTrn8E05hK-m6Yt4go8zMCoM9D9OqdNshSHuTmUGfUHRCWiXH4IsOma5FR3N-s/s1600/mens.jpg" height="460" width="640" /></a></td></tr>

</tbody></table>
<br />
<div style="font-size: 12.7272720336914px;">
<span style="font-size: small;">Isaiah, Jared, and Rob, three of my favorite male fashion bloggers pictured above, take tailoring very seriously. Even in casual looks they know that nothing looks sharper than a proper fit. From pants to shirts, and blazers, even sweaters and t shirts, every look can benefit from a custom fit. Don't be afraid to take in the shoulders, shorten a sleeve, or lengthen a pair of pants. Finding a tailor you like can take some time, but the good news is you only have to search once. Word of mouth is best, but also ask the sales people where you shop. Many stores offer tailoring and can tell you where to find a pro in your neck of the woods. For more about tailoring visit <a href="http://zelmarose.blogspot.com/2014/06/good-measure-secret-to-jack-whites-sexy.html" target="_blank">here.</a></span></div>
<div style="font-size: 12.7272720336914px;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="font-size: 12.7272720336914px;">
<span style="font-size: small;">PATTERN PLAY</span></div>
<div style="font-size: 12.7272720336914px;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<div style="font-size: 12.7272720336914px;">
<span style="font-size: small;">Outside of a custom fit, looking sharp really comes down to color and pattern. I always notice pattern play and love it when men get creative in mixing and matching pattern. Isaiah, Jared, and Rob are pros at it , but what I love most about pattern play is that mixing it up really lets individual style shine through. Dress shirt and tie combos are great places to mix pattern. Think stripes with plaid or polka dots, even plaid on plaid! Mixing pattern can be playful, outlandish, classic, and modern. No matter the look, letting your individuality shine through always looks confident, and that's the key to killer style!</span></div>
<div style="font-size: 12.7272720336914px;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="font-size: 12.7272720336914px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

</tbody></table>
</div>
<div>
<br />
OWN IT</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
One of the many things I've learned from my customers over the years is that when it comes to looking sharp you've simply got to own it. One of my favorite things about living in Northern California and catering to the bohemian and unique style of my customers is that the very same bow tie can be just as effective on a tattooed bike messenger as it is on a financial district VC. As long as you own your look, I'll consider your style to be razor sharp. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<br />
<div>
There are a million so called rules out there that one can follow to look their best, but I think having style is about following a few simple and straightforward ideas that you create for yourself. When it comes to my own designs and who I design for, looking sharp is as easy as:<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
FIT</div>
<div>
+<br />
PATTERN</div>
<div>
+</div>
<div>
OWNERSHIP</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
then</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
REPEAT.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>

You're So Vain has remained one of those songs that you find yourself and everyone else singing along to on line at the grocery store. It's a classic for sure and few things feel better after a breakup than belting it out in your car. It's definitely my favorite song on this album and when I heard it on Pandora while working yesterday I wished there had been a piano in my studio! Carly's voice is as distinctive as her style and I just love everything about the boho 70's vibe she is rockin' on the album cover. This look could be in the pages of any fashion magazine today and is both chic and comfortable. It had me immediately running for my floppy hat and over sized hobo bag.<br />

I was fortunate to grow up going to games with my Dad, Mets and Yankees, and if I had endless hours to fill my day they would be all spent at the ball park. When I moved from New York to San Francisco in 1997, becoming a <a href="http://sanfrancisco.giants.mlb.com/index.jsp?c_id=sf" target="_blank">Giants</a> fan was an easy sell. The franchise started in New York after all and with the promise of a brand new ball park on the horizon it was a good time to start sharing some of my Yankee pinstripes with the orange and black.<br />

Last year we started a new family tradition around here by going on a tour of AT&T Park, home of the San Francisco Giants, every October. If you are local, or planning a trip to the Bay Area, add taking a tour of AT&T Park to the top of your to do list. Now granted I love baseball, but if you are just a little luke warm on the sport, setting foot on the warning track, sitting in the dugout and walking around the visiting team locker room might sell you on the sport.<br />

Plus, it's just plain beautiful. With sweeping views of the San Francisco Bay, the Oakland Bay Bridge, Treasure Island and pretty much as far as the eye can see, a visit to the ball park offers so much more than just great Giants history.<br />
<br />
Not only will you get to see the World Series trophies, but you'll learn why the ball park was built in 5 separate sections, who championed the Giants staying in San Francisco and helped raise privately donated money to build the stadium, and why the green goes deeper than just the outfield.<br />

I think I can speak for all Giants fans when I say we deeply love this team. The last 4 years have been an incredible ride and I am so grateful for all the fun and memories. The Giants embody all the things I love most about baseball. They work hard, play hard, and just like Travis Ishikawa's walk off home run in the NLDS, they provide us with inspiration and celebration. While I will root root root for the Giants in the next few days, no matter the result I will be proud to call the orange and black my home team.<br />

I'm a huge Giant's fan, so my October is looking pretty good. Truth be told I've had a pretty good run with my fandom. I grew up in New York, went to the 1986 World Series, yeah I was at Game 6, and yeah, it was amazing. Follow that up with the Yankees winning the fall classic a million times in the 90's and you can imagine, baseball was not a hard sport to love. <br />

When I moved to San Francisco from New York, loving the Giants was pretty easy. They were originally from New York after all, and with the plans of the new ball park under way, it was hard not to take notice. Fast forward to 2010, my daughter being born during the World Series, two parades and endless fun later, you can say I bleed orange.<br />
<br />
We visited home of the Giants, AT&T Park this past weekend for our annual family tour. I will be sharing the fun with you later in the week, but for now I wanted to talk fan gear. It's not for everyone, but for those of us who just need to show our colors I do have some advice.<br />
<br />
Keep it simple. There is a lot of great design happening right now in fan gear. Go with something that feels right and can become part of your regular weekend wardrobe. Whether you are in to hats, t's, hoodies, or scarves, you can probably find something you would wear even if it wasn't advertising your favorite team.<br />
<br />
One at a time, with exception. Wear one piece at a time. Keep it to a hat or a shirt or a jersey. The exception being of course if your team is in the World Series. Then just go crazy and wear it all at once. It's the freaking World Series and it's great.<br />
<br />
Quality. Sure the shirts sold in the parking lot for $5 are great, but chances are the stuff sold in the team store will probably hold up a bit better. This goes for jerseys too. If you are going to wear a jersey, wear a jersey. Get the nice one for the big bucks like the players wear. That's the whole point right?<br />
<br />
I picked up the sweet shirt above at the Dugout store yesterday. It's bright, super California, and just what I need to get me through the Series.<br />
<br />
It's October. I'm obsessed. All hail baseball.<br />
<br />
xoxo<br />
