Good Measure: A New Weekly Style Feature Coming to Zelma Rose

I love meeting customers in person and over the past year as my custom work has grown to include a good deal of made-to-measure accessories for weddings, I have gotten to meet face to face with many Bay Area couples getting ready to tie the knot. What I had not anticipated as part of my custom services, was the desire for me to give design feedback and help style entire wedding wardrobes. Makes perfect sense, right? Why wouldn't I be asked for style advice on suits, dresses, and color schemes when I am creating a custom set of jewelry and accessories for the event? It has been great fun for me to help couples choose between a classic cut jacket, or a sash lapel, shirt colors, shoes, wedding party dress lengths and everything in between. I love showing customers how to celebrate their individual style and look their best, especially while rockin' some ZR.

Many of you have been asking for tips, advice, and a look inside my closet and in response to your requests, both at in person design consults and via email, twitter and the like, I have created a new column on the blog, Good Measure. Good Measure will be a collection of posts and style tips to help you put your best fashion foot forward. I'll be covering everything from how to tie the perfect bow tie and choosing the perfect neckwear fit for your proportions, to layering jewelry, incorporating heirlooms into your wardrobe and giving you an inside look at what I wear day in and day out. I'll also cover fashion triumphs and not so stellar moments to keep you pointed in the right direction.

Join me on Monday for the first Good Measure post. I'll be sharing my thoughts on Justin Timberlake's appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and breaking down some of the finer and not so well-proportioned wardrobe choices.

In the end, it's not about what you wear, but how you wear it.

xoxo

The Identity Project

Sarah Deragon - Founder of The Identity Project

Those of you who are faithful ZR followers know that I owe all my beautiful model photography to my friend, colleague, and all around partner in crime Sarah Deragon of Portraits To The People. Not only does Sarah take great portraits, but we work so well together! Our shoots are always relaxed and fun and of course full of great 90's hip hop. As part of Sarah's body of work as a photographer, she ventured out to start a fine art personal project this year and those of us lucky enough to be in SF couldn't be happier. Simply put, The Identity Project is an exploration of the ways we choose to define ourselves and our sexuality.

San Francisco has a reputation for anything goes and thank god for that! To this day, we can all pretty much agree to disagree, be one thing by day and the polar opposite by night, and define ourselves however we choose. One of my favorite things about San Francisco is the way we choose to define ourselves with a wide focus. We may be part of one thing, but that doesn't mean we cannot be a part of many things. I see this reflected in fashion all the time, and why not! Fashion is one of the ways we can define our ever changing selves and when it comes to how we present ourselves to the world, in San Francisco we do it with never ending creativity and exuberance. We pretty much love who we are and isn't that damn refreshing?!

Needless to say I love the images that Sarah has captured. I think it is about time we all take the reigns on how we want to be identified. I also love the way the participants have chosen to identify themselves. When I think of my own identity, it would probably be a paragraph. I like that Sarah is leading the charge of identity being many things, all at once. We are, after all, a sum of our parts.

You will find some of my favorite images from the Identity Project below.  I picked a few friendly faces, including one you might recognize as one of the ZR models. While I love the poses, passion, and photography, I also kind of love the fashion. Kudos Sarah on a great start to a project that will no doubt be epic!

Rare Device Trunk Show

It's that time of year when love is in the air! That's right people, I'm talking Valentine's Day. This is your moment to be a gifting hero, so why not go ahead and take it?! I'm so excited to be at Rare Device again this year for a Valentine's Day Trunk Show! If you haven't been to Rare Device, it is one of my favorite stores in San Francisco. Owners Giselle & Phurba are not only incredibly lovely people, but they have rounded up the best independent design has to offer, with visual displays that will leave you drooling.

I'll be spending the weekend of February 8 & 9 at the shop with my designer gal pal Molly of Rabbit Foot Fern. There will be Zelma Rose bow ties, pocket squares, jewelry along with the lovely stationary of Rabbit Foot Fern. Plus hold onto your hats, Molly and I will be introducing Existential Crisis Club, our new blog and stationary line.

So come on down to say hello, pick up some goodies for your love, even learn how to tie a bow tie, and get a tarot card reading.

Bralettes & Bow Ties

When one of my favorite gal pal designers asked if I wanted to throw a party with Rue Magazine I really didn't need to think too much before I squealed and said YES! Stephanie Bodnar of Honey Cooler Handmade is one of my favorite designers and best lady friends. Her handmade lingerie is absolutely stunning, perfectly feminine, and expertly hand crafted. Her work is flawless and she is THE maven of insertion lace, which is one of the most difficult and time consuming styles to sew. In short, Steph is a fashion genius!

The two of us like working together and you might remember last year we teamed up for a Great Gatsby photo shoot with the guys of Trick Dog. We had such a great time at Bralettes & Bow Ties last week that we are already busy planning our next event!

I want to give my most heartfelt thanks to everyone involved. One of my favorite things about being a SF designer is getting to work with such incredible and generous people. Thanks to Rue Magazine, Camille Schmidt Public Relations, Rebecca Taff Makeup Artist, Cristal Veronica Photos, Portraits To The People, bartender extraordinaire Borden Ornelaz, and models Marianne and Richelle. We couldn't have done it without you!

Big hugs to all the friends who came out to celebrate handmade design in San Francisco. It was great to see some familiar faces and meet some new ones. I loved meeting you all! You might spy some people you know in the photos below. I have love in my heart for you San Francisco.

Here are some of my favorite photos from the night. To view the full albums head on over to the Zelma Rose Facebook Page.
