Style File 3.29.13 DIY Round up

With spring in full swing in Northern California, my mind turns to taking on some projects around the house.  There have been some great DIY posts floating around the past few weeks so I thought it fun to round up some of my favorites for a spring time DIY Style File.  The concrete stool from Remodelista is a must on my list, along with the Design Sponge sling magazine rack.  And, we will most definitely be making those NYC Subway Easter eggs this weekend, you just can't take the NY out of the girl.

1. Subway Eggs // 2. Phone Bookends // 3. Ombre Basket // 4. Pencils // 5. Concrete Stool // 6. Animal Hooks // 7. Chair // 8. Magazine Rack//  9. Paint Chip Animals

Wishing you all a happy weekend!  What DIY projects will be on your list?

In the Studio 3.27.13 The Dapper Trend at Trick Dog

Zelma Rose teamed up with some good friends earlier this week for a deliciously dapper Great Gatsby themed photo shoot, and whoa what fun!  If you didn't already know, a remake of the Great Gatsby is scheduled to be released this May making fashion this spring and moving forward to fall, deliciously dapper.  San Francisco is known for it's eclectic style and turning trends on it's head, so it should come as no surprise when my girl Stephanie, from Honey Cooler Handmade had the idea to put together a neo deco photo shoot, we found some ready and willing lovelies to put their San Francisco spin on the trend.

It's all about location and we could not have gotten luckier this time around.  When I asked Stephanie what her dream locale was, without hesitation she said, Trick Dog. We were so lucky to get Josh Harris of The Bon Vivants and owner of Trick Dog on board.  Stephanie asked and he graciously said YES.  Gotta love that!  Truth be told, there's a lot to love about Josh.  He's a brilliant business man, duh, passionate about his work, and a native San Franciscan.  Plus, so warm and nice and an all around gentleman.  He welcomed the whole team of us with open arms and an open mind, and that says a lot when you have a team of designers, stylists, photags, and models descend upon your business.  Not only that but Morgan & Chad of Trick Dog, two of Trick Dog's most dapper and let's face it, the best damn mixologists in town, gave up their afternoon to model for yours truly.  Yeah, it was a really stressful afternoon...ha!

We could not have had a better team, so without further pomp and circumstance, here's the dream team.  Photos will come soon, but in the mean time, take a peek at some of my instagram shots from the day.

Style File 3.22.13 Tomboy Trend

With the launch of the Zelma Rose Bow Tie this week, I have been thinking a lot about my love of men's fashion.  I think I actually fell in love with men's fashion first.  I was definitely the only 1st grader who showed up to picture day wearing a camel corduroy blazer and matching newsboy cap.  I have my grandmother to thank for that killer outfit. I have always loved a well fitted blazer and through the years, no matter the trend, my closet has always included a classic white dress shirt, well tailored blazer and a pair of spectator shoes and penny loafers.  I guess you could say that on occasion I dress exactly the same as I did in the 1st grade.  Ha. It wasn't until I finally saw Annie Hall that it all really came together.  When I first saw Diane Keaton on the screen in an over sized white men's dress shit and necktie from her Grammy Hall, I knew I had found my first real style icon.  With the Tomboy look on trend for Fall 2013, I thought it would be fun to post some of my favorite street style looks for this week's Style File.

In the Studio 3.20.13 The Zelma Rose Bow Tie

Well, it's been a long time coming.  A year to be exact.  Hard to believe I started making the custom ZR Bow Tie over a year ago. Customers started asking for bow ties to match their pocket squares, so of course designing a line of bow ties seemed like a natural fit for ZR. Patterned after the old fashioned self-tie bow ties my grandfather used to wear while working at his carpenter's bench, the Zelma Rose Bow Tie is finally here! As they say, it takes a village and this time around I have Sarah Deragon of Portraits To The People to thank for the gorgeous photographs, my models Jared and Bobby, and the Makeshift Society for a perfect place to shoot the goods.

The Goods

Zelma Rose Bow Ties are handcrafted in our Northern California studio in limited editions using the highest quality new and vintage fabrics. Each Zelma Rose Bow Tie is an old fashioned self-tie patterned after the kind my grandfather used to wear while working at his carpenter's bench.  The Zelma Rose Bow Tie is designed to look great for 5 days a week at the office, behind the carpenters bench, or a night on the town. Fabrics are hand chosen to reflect the classic beauty and unique style of Northern California.

Zelma Rose Bow Tie Collection

As you can see from the models, (huge thanks to Jared Grellner of Tomfoolery and Bobby Jernegan of Porcini, you will learn more about them in the upcoming Look Book) I was really inspired by Bay Area street style.  NorCal men are mixing it up these days with inspiring texture and pattern play. Fearless when it comes to color and layering they have managed to perfect a well crafted wardrobe that works for city and sea.

I have to admit, I think that Blue Ombre one on the top right is my favorite. I'd love your feedback about the new goods!  Comment below or shoot me an email with your thoughts.

Happy Wednesday!

Now Hear This 3.18.13 Parenting Magazine Easter Feature

It's hard to believe that Easter is one week away!  Weather wise, northern California is already there.  Our days have been sun filled and it's safe to say spring is practically in full bloom.  With Easter being in March instead of April this year, the editorial calendar for spring fashion features was super early and I started sending samples out in early November.  The beginning of the month marked the first national magazine fashion feature for Zelma Rose!  Parenting Magazine put together an adorable shoot of fresh springtime looks and included one of our Bow Tie Boutonnieres on a little boy.  It never even occurred to me to use the boutonniere as a full sized bow tie on a little one, but leave it to the fashion editors at Parenting Magazine to think outside the box.  I'm really pleased at how the shoot turned out and the response thus far has been great.  You can find the spread in the March 2013 issue of Parenting Magazine in stores nationwide.  Here's the shot.

Style File 3.15.13 9 Sorbet Trend Picks to Get You Ready for Spring

This week has been all about the sorbets!  Spring is right around the corner and the weather here in sunny California is already showing signs of warmer days. We saw near 80 degrees this week. It was heaven! The air smells sweet and our doors will soon be open letting all the ocean air in. Pastels are popping up everywhere this spring and their arrival is so refreshing.  Today I pulled together some of my favorite pastel picks to give you all a little spring fever.

In the Studio 3.13.2013 Sorbet to Cleanse the Palette

This week I've been multi-tasking like a champ.  Not really like a champ, but multi-taking the hell out of the week regardless. A lot has been going on.  We wrapped up Mind Your Business Boot Camp at the Makeshift Society this past weekend, which was pretty incredible.  The Boot Camp was a year in the making and all started with a little blog that could, known as Awfully Grand. I never imagined that Zelma Rose & Lisa Anderson Consulting would be in full swing a year ago.  It's all been pretty incredible, and a massive amount of work pushing what often times seems a super galactic sized boulder up a mountain. I really must be crazy.  Luckily I'm licensed to agree.

The studio has been humming. The highlights thus far were sending a custom zodiac necklace off to a couple awaiting the birth of their daughter and sending a sorbet colored honeycomb cross stitch necklace to a woman who is wearing it in her engagement photos.  Neat!!

I released my line of mint-centric cross stitch necklaces in the fall, anticipating the sorbet spring trend.  They have been popping up all over the place and it turns out Martha Stewart is a fan, adding one to her American Made Instagram Feed and in an ad in collaboration with Toyota on her website.  Here are some stills:

Hooray Martha!!  And to answer your question, yes I'm dying over it.  She is only kind of amazing.

I can't seem to get enough of the sorbet trend.  It really is refreshing after a winter spent in sparkle motion with lots of rich and heavy metallics.  I'll be revisiting the trend Friday with Style File, so stop back and say hi.

Happy Wednesday!

Now Hear This 3.11.13 Zelma Rose Goes Prime Time

A little over a week ago, I had my first shot at being a TV stylist.  It was not something I was expecting, but one of the fun little things that can happen when you put yourself out there and take risks as a business owner.  Fashion and Lifestyle Expert Kimberly Anderson (no relation, but how cute is that) of Get Your Style Back was looking for fresh takes on this springs sorbet color palette trend.  I had been planning for the sorbet trend since the late summer when I introduced the mint fabric to my Cross Stitch Necklace line, so I have been ready and waiting! Kimberly asked me to send her a few pieces for the segment and something to compliment Emerald, the 2013 Pantone color of the year.  Perfect!  I sent over two of my cross stitch pieces along with a zodiac necklace created just for Kimberly in her sign to pop against her gorgeous emerald dress.  Kimberly does such a great job with her segments and I'm so happy how everything turned out!  Not to mention it is a total kick to have my name under the style credits with Zappos.com!  Hey girl, not too shabby! My deepest gratitude to Kimberly for her interest in my designs and asking me to style her loveliness for this Spring Trend 2013 segment.  It was great fun and hopefully the first of many style gigs. You can check out the segment below, along with some stills of all the action.

Style File 3.8.13 Turnstiles NYC

As often happens when the seasons begin to show signs of turning, I miss New York.  I've lived in San Francisco for 16 years and adore my home by the bay, but as they say, you can take the girl out of New York, never the New York out of the girl.  So much of my personality, drive, passion, and overall craziness comes from that ever ambitious, ever opinionated, ever in motion New York state of mind.  With work and family I don't get to visit as often as I like and when my heart starts to bleed Yankee pinstripes, I turn to some good 'ol fashioned rock and roll to cure my homesick blues.

This past week I have been listening to Billy Joel Turnstiles.  My love of Billy Joel, being from Long Island is kind of hot and cold.  Sometimes I really do not like his music, other times it so reminds me of where I am from that I can't help but belt out every single last word.  Whatever the terms of our complicated relationship, Turnstiles remains my all time favorite Billy Joel album despite the fact that it really shouldn't be.  You'd think I would favor Cold Spring Harbor, that's where I'm from after all and how many people get to say that someone wrote an entire album about their beach side town? Nevertheless, this week's Style File is inspired by the Turnstiles album cover.  It's so 70's I just love it and after looking at it on itunes all week, I couldn't help but be inspired. The vintage Dior sunglasses I'm trying to track down as we speak.  I might need those!

In the Studio 3.6.13 Look Book Wrap Up

I'm happy to say that all the pieces are in place for the Zelma Rose 2013 Look Book. Sarah is working hard on the photos as we speak and I met with friend and graphic designer Molly Covert of Rabbit Foot Fern this morning to talk about the layout.  I'm so excited!! While we were shooting, Sarah was nice enough to make this preview video.  She's been really into video lately, and yours truly has been reaping the benefits (thanks Sarah, heart you lady)! Sarah also made the trailers for our Mind Your Business Boot Camp.  So sit back, relax, grab your popcorn and take a sneak peek at what we have been up to:

Like I said last week, the whole experience was such a pleasure all around.  I'm starting to plan the release party and will keep you up to date on all the fun.

Style File 3.1.2013

Welcome to March!  I can't believe that Spring is right around the corner.  Usually this time of year I am about to get real serious about my house.  It's time to put away the winter wardrobe and get the place ready for the beautiful California sunshine.  We pretty much go barefoot and live outdoors from April to October and this means clearing the way for fog weary guests from the city and living life with open doors and windows.  For this weeks Style File I pulled together some of my favorite home decor items that I have been eyeing to redesign the place for Spring & Summer.

Book Rack // Bird House // Door Stop // Spoons // Knobs // Vase // Chair // Toolbox // Bowls
